November's Honest Co. Family Essentials Bundle Shipment

As many of you may know, I have been quite a fan of The Honest Company. My obsession began over a year and a half ago when I first started researching chemical-free disposable diapers for my boys for a day-long airport adventure to travel across the country. Yes, as a devout "fluff lover", the thought still makes me twinge (no offense to "sposie" users), but I wanted the best solution for my sweet children.

While touring the Honest Co. website, I instantly fell in love with all of the products that they had to offer, and it seems like the selection grows each month! I could confidently say that I have tried at least 80% of their product selection.

So what comes with an Honest Co. order? The Honest Co. offers a 3 bundle options (Diapers & Wipes, Essentials, and Health & Wellness), which allow the customer to save between 25-35% off of the products of their choosing. I subscribe to the Essentials bundle, which costs me $35.95 per month and I get to choose 5 of my favorite products, and I can add more at 25% off.

This is what I decided to order this month :

* Honest Free & Clear Laundry Detergent
* Honest Auto Dishwasher Gel
* Organic Cotton Honest Dish Towels (2-pack)
* Honest Face & Body Lotion
* Honest Kids Toothpaste
* BONUS : Sample of Honest 4-in-1 Laundry Pods

 While I was thrilled with the large box of goodies that came to my door, I was a little dissapointed after looking up each product on the Environmental Work Group website to check out the actual "chemical-free goodness" of each product. Normally, I look up a product before purchasing, but I just assumed that the company's mission of creating an "unquestionably safe product", was good enough for me.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Honest Co.'s products and they are constantly striving to make their products better and always consider the voices of their customers at the same time and are great at addressing their concerns. In fact, some of their formulations have been changed (like the shampoo & conditioner) over time.

My main concern was the EWG rating on the free & detergent. This was the second time that I had bought this product, but was not as environmentally friendly as I thought, and received a C rating on the EWG website. Not only am I huge fan of eliminating as much toxin exposure as possible, I also care about what is being dumped back into our precious water supply.

Now, I do not mean to scare you, because honestly speaking, this detergent rates far better than others that many of us use (ex. Tide, Gain, Era, All, Dreft, BabyGanics...). You can see how your detergent rates here.

However, here is the deal...the EWG works with limited data and not all product ingredients can be weighed the same. For example, some ingredients can be contaminated with a particular toxin, so claiming that a product contains a toxin because other products that have that ingredient have that toxin present, isn't fair (but that is why the EWG mentions "limited data" on each ingredient).

The Honest Co. posted a response to the EWG ratings on their blog last year. In addition, you can read about the Honest Co.'s "Honestly Free Guarantee" here. It is up to the consumer to make the judgement with all of the information at hand before making a decision o buy a product. Your best bet would be to obtain a copy of third party laboratory testing.

However, I was quite excited that the Honest Co. 4-in-1 laundry pods received an A rating, which will probably be the detergent that I buy next time around. All of the other products listed rated a 3 (low overall toxicity hazard) or 0 (hooray!), and compared to the other products marked "natural" that I have bought in the past, Honest Co. does a great job at creating a product that I feel safe exposing my family to. In fact, the Honest Co. body lotion is the ONLY lotion that I will allow on my children's skin, since it is among the top rated (with a score of 0 on the toxicity scale) on the EWG.

The Honest Co. is still my favorite brand for most of my household personal care and cleaning products!

  1. Interesting. I didn't think to look up the EWG of products before. I've really been thinking about buying an Honest Co "membership" if you will. We could always use more stuff, and we really really love natural things! :)

    Thanks for the review, I had no idea about some of these things. Now that I know more, I might just go ahead and buy that "membership". :)

  2. I keep seeing the ad on Facebook for The Honest Company samples. I am been tempted to order the samples. I plan to cloth diaper but their diapers are cute. As for the EWG ratings is is SO hard to find stuff between 0-3 ratimgs in the stores here. I would love to just buy it off the shelf than order. Save $$$.

  4. Like I had mentioned, the EWG works with very limited (and often incomplete) data. One the one hand, it is good that the rate a product negatively for the lack of data...much like not showing your work on math homework, but then again sometimes the product could have the low rating that it deserves.

    You have to make your best judgement.

  5. Thanks for the discount code! I was aware of their diapers but hadn't really looked into their other products. I'd love to try out new dish soap.

  6. I will have to check out their lotion. My oldest has very sensitive skin so finding a good lotion that doesn't irritate him has not been easy.
