Chubby Elephant Diapers Hybrid Fitted Review

During the 4 1/2 years of cloth diapering, I had ventured into almost all of the cloth diapering styles, but "fitteds" were never one of them. You could imagine my surprise when Laura, owner of the Chubby Elephant hyena cart store, had offered to make my son a hybrid fitted diaper and to share with my readers.

For this review, Laura sent me a hybrid fitted with hidden anti-pill fleece in a size large.

Features

Shell

* Available in 2 sizes (small fits 10 - 20 lbs, large fits 17 - 35 lbs)
* Cotton knit outer
* Hidden inside layer of  bamboo fleece, anti-pill fleece, or wind pro fleece ($4 extra charge) & topped with super soft cotton velour
* Optional : to add fold down or snap down rise for smaller babies.

Insert/soaker

* Snap in petal-style soaker
* Additional snap-in doubler

...for a total of 3 layers of cotton velour & 6 layers of organic bamboo fleece!

A Note About Fitted Hybrids

For those of you who are new to cloth diapering, you may be questioning...what on earth is a "hybrid fitted"? Don't feel to bad...because I did not know either, so I looked it up.

First of all, a "fitted" is a diaper that does not adjust and fits a certain size range and it does not contain a waterproof layer, making the diaper quite breathable. Laura has two sizes available, small (fits 10 - 20 lbs) and large (fits 17 - 35 lbs). A hybrid fitted is composed of 3 layers : a layer of fleece in between the outer print material and velour.

This diaper is carefully designed so that the velor resists wetness while distributing the urine to the super absorbent fleece inner...without completely soaking the outer knit layer! So many times while Leettle and I are at home, I let him run around in this diaper WITHOUT the cover.

If you are not a fan of fitted diapers, Laura also offers all-in-2 diapers that include the waterproof PUL and a inner micro-chamois layer.

What I Love About This Diaper

I can't get over how incredibly soft and squishy this diaper really is! My "Leettle" practically ripped it from my hands and said "I want to change (into) soft diaper!". We both loved the print and colored velour that Laura had picked out for us, and she must have read my son's mind...because he loves robots!

After prepping, which I had washed four times in the washer and dried, the diaper did shrink, but it was still incredibly stretchy and fit Leettle perfectly. The construction of this diaper exceeded my expectations, I have only tried a few WAHM diapers and I am no seamstress, but the sewing job was absolutely wonderful. Much time and careful detail went into making this diaper, and I couldn't be happier.

The soft diaper shell and soaker, provided quite a bit of absorbency, as you can see in the picture below, there is about an inch of thickness!

Night Time Use

The first thought that always comes to mind when using a new diaper for bed time is - "will this diaper leak?" When paired with my favorite cover (as shown below), this diaper did not leak. We now have a new favorite night time diaper!

Leettle loves this diaper for night time, because of the incredibly soft velour, and it is his first choice if it is washed. One night, my husband offered to change him before bed and did not know that this diaper required a waterproof cover. When Leettle woke up the next morning, his pajamas were only a little damp. Typically, pre-folds are the nighttime method of choice, but when Leettle wets his diaper, he wakes up screaming! With this hybrid fitted, the wetness remains in the middle of the diaper and the velour keeps his bottom dry, so he can continue on dreaming until morning...

The Chubby Elephant Hybrid Fitted pairs well with the Thirsties Duo Wrap!

Bottom Line

I love my son's Chubby Elephant hybrid fitted! This diaper is a lot "fluffier" than most when all inserts are used so Leettle's pants are a little snug, but what is most important to me is that it does it's job well. Compared to other hybrid fitteds that I have seen, the Chubby Elephant diapers are comparatively priced at $25 each.

This diaper is also incredibly easy to care for. Since it does not contain any microfiber (know to be a hot bed for detergent buildup...leading to stink issues), this diaper requires less "stripping" and does not hold in any stink! If my son wasn't so close to potty training, I would be quite tempted to sell off all of our pocket diapers to add more hybrid fitteds to our stash.

Yes, hybrid fitteds are a more expensive option when considering a cloth diaper, but the quality and durability exceeds any other diaper in my son's stash. Of course, I also cannot put a price on my son's comfort. Thank you Laura, your diaper truly ranks the top of our favorite diapers list!

  16. Ilove chubby elephant hybrid fitteds. I have one that is in regular rotation. The only issue with it is that my chubby elephant is so chubby that the diaper can leave some pretty nasty red marks on his thighs if I'm not super careful about reseating the elastic and leaving the diaper plenty loose.
