I signed up for the flats challenge!
For one week, I will be ditching my pocket cloth diapers, AIO's, and AI2's.
No washer or dryer
No flush-able liners
...just good ole hand-washing!
Why on earth would I be possessed to do such a thing? Well, for the past couple of years I have heard of other cloth diapering bloggers taking part in a week long challenge called the Flats and Hand-washing Challenge.
To be honest, I could not get myself to actually read their posts throughout the event. I was perfectly fine with allowing my washer to do all of the dirty work, and just couldn't bring myself to hand wash cloth for two children if I didn't have to.
This year, though, will be different. As my family has moved towards an more self-sustaining lifestyle, I thought, "well, why not?". Over the past couple of years, my husband and I have gained a greater respect in caring for the Earth while moving away from dependance on as man modern conveniences as possible - but he haven't reached "Little House on The Prairie", because I am not quite ready to give up my favorite stream-able shows on our Roku box at night.
Though I was not that thrilled with the idea at first, but an amazing sense of accomplishment and joy comes from actually growing and making things from my own hands. Our family has grown a deeper respect for the world that we live in, learning to help one another, and to be grateful for what we have...a great value that seems to be diminishing in our world.
So, by participating in this event, I hope to gain a new respect for what it means to be resourceful and to help prove that anyone can cloth diaper and stretch the savings even further (as I will be making a large portion, or maybe even all, of the "flats stash") from no-longer-needed clothing.
Interested in participating too? You do not need to be a blogger to participate! Sign up HERE.

You can also make your own using old t-shirts around the house (which will make up most of my flats stash for this event), or for about $0.25 each using XXL t-shirts purchased from a thrift store! Check out this tutorial from Dirty Diaper Laundry...
Be sure to come back to my blog daily during this event! I will be sharing my homemade detergent recipes, joys, frustrations, and all of my experiences during the challenge. Don't worry...all photos will contain clean diapers!
