We Are Lovin' It Our Way!

At a recent trip to a well known burger place, the food bill for 2 kids meals (cost was extra for apples and chocolate milk), and a less than desirable chicken & apple salad, cost my bank account a little over $14.00. I left the place feeling quite ripped off, still hungry, and quite guilty for making my youngest eat his greasy little burger.

We really do not eat out quite often, but while we are out on the road or simply running around town to accomplish a full day of errands, I can't help but pick up something quick to eat for the kids. Which is a great reminder that I really should get in the habit of pre-packing healthy lunches and snacks.

A few days ago...we discovered a new option, Whole Foods! Many times I forget that this store has a self-serve salad and food bar. My kids and I simply stopped in for a quick snack and drink, but the delightful aromas convinced us that we wanted lunch. Whole Foods has a variety of entrees and side dishes of fish, soups, salads, pastas, and more. The menu constantly changes too. It was so hard to decide on what I wanted to eat!

"Thanks Mom!"

At first, I was a little worried that $7.99 per pound of food was not going to get us much, but I was so tempted by the strawberry, feta, and spinach salad topped with almonds and the black bean burrito, that I shrugged my worries off and thought "what the heck". Of course the kids saw the pepperoni pizza slices and wanted nothing else (no momma points for me here), but at least instead of antibiotic infused chocolate cows milk, they had fruit smoothie juices with no added sugar or additives to drink with their lunch.

Hooray for unnecessary sugar!

And the cost?

Yep...$12.44! Not only did I save a couple of dollars, but we ate antibiotic-free meats and organic veggies (well, at least I took advantage of the latter)! I was quite thrilled when I had the choice to drink as much distilled water as I wanted too. I also had the choice to drink my favorite stevia sweetened all natural soda, which is a better substitute for a drink with corn syrup as its number 1 ingredient.

My children may not have had the healthiest lunch, but I would like to think that I had made a slightly better choice. Maybe next time I could get them to share some greens with me.

Do you have a favorite place to eat out? How do you decide on where to go and is nutrition a factor in your decision? Feel free to comment!

Nutrition is usually a factor for me when we go out to eat, because I want to change my kids habits.
